the improvising school

”where you learn what to do when you don’t know what to do”

developing learning and leadership in a complex world

Nick Sorensen is an independent consultant with over 25 year’s experience of teaching and leadership in secondary schools. He is also a talented and creative jazz saxophonist.

He created The Improvising School in 2003 in order to explore the ways in which improvisation can illuminate our understanding of creativity, learning and leadership; vitally important concepts in a rapidly changing world. The Improvising School provided Nick with a rich metaphor for a dynamic learning community and allowed him to make valuable connections between his experiences as an educator and as a jazz musician.

“In the beginning I gave myself permission to talk about the concept of ‘the improvising school’ as if it really existed … and since then I have moved towards making it happen. My aim is to offer inspiring and innovative opportunities to enable myself and others to develop a deeper understanding of learning, leadership and creativity. These are the habits that are essential for individuals to be successful in the 21st century”

The Improvising School is committed to supporting the personal and professional development of individuals and organizations. Drawing on a range of disciplines, that include music, drama, psychology and organizational theory, The Improvising School offers interactive workshops that allow the experience of the participants to engage with the latest research on learning and leadership. Nick’s skilled and sensitive facilitation produces valuable and transformative insights.

What people say about the workshops

“You provided me with the perfect opportunity to reflect on my own values, practice and pathway to leadership. This is something that we teachers rarely have time to do and yet it's so important.”                                                                           Preparation for Headship course

“Brilliant experience …challenging … rewarding …inspiring. ALL the participants rated the session as excellent. This is almost unprecedented.”                               Sixth-form improvisation masterclass

Nick brought a real clarity to the subject (of learning)

Your musical background was a great way to introduce your ideas on coaching. Congratulations, one of the best Inset sessions we’ve ever had!                      Coaching: from principles to practice

A well resourced, good quality presentation that was thought provoking.
