the improvising school

 new directions in learning, creativity and leadership

We all live in a rapidly changing and complex world. In order to succeed and thrive in this environment we need to be adaptable and innovative. Learning has become a lifelong activity and, whatever we do, we all need to learn how to improvise.

the Improvising School was created by Nick Sorensen in April 2003 with the following four aims:

  1. To undertake research into the theory and practice of improvisation: in the arts and everyday life
  2. To develop the practice of improvisation in music and nurturing an appreciation of improvised music
  3. To apply the theory and practice of improvisation in schools in order to develop learning, creativity and leadership;
  4. To use improvisation as a medium for training and professional development in business and industry

These aims are realised through:

  • education consultancy
  • music performance
  • music workshops
  • writing
  • training courses for business and industry

Further information about the improvising school can be found on this web site.
